BRIEF CLUB HISTORY
This page was updated by Lion Alaric on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 20:03:23 BSTBasildon Lions Club was formed in 1970
In March 1970, following an article in the Evening Echo, seven prospective Basildon Lions met under the guidance of the Romford Lions Club. A few weeks later the Basildon Lions Club was formed with 24 members and with a good mix of occupations, including a teacher, accountants, shop manager, solicitor, and others with various trades. The club received its Charter on November 4th 1970. At that time the members were all male, with their ladies and friends giving assistance at various fund-raising and service activities. Later, the rules were changed so that ladies could become full members. The original geographic area covered by the club was the whole of Basildon District, ie, it included Billericay and Wickford. With the agreement of the Basildon Club, the seperate Billericay Club was set up in 1979 as a 'daughter' club of Brentwood. Then, again with the agreement of the Basildon Club, the Wickford Club was set up in 1995, and the area then covered by the Basildon Club was Basildon, Laindon, and Pitsea.
The Basildon Club established a twinning relationship with the Lions Club of Harderwijk, The Netherlands, and exchange visits take place most years.
Wickford Lions Club was formed in 1995
Through the drive of two of the members of The Lions Club of Billericay a meeting was arranged where 12 Prospective members got together at the Wickford Community Centre in the autumn of 1994 and over a pint or two discussed the possibility of forming a club of 20 or more members, this was to meet the minimum requirements of the International Constitution. It was agreed that to encourage other like minded people we would start fund raising and socialising as soon as possible, the first fund raising event was a very successful quiz night, then a couple of outings, prospective members also assisted Billericay on their Xmas Sleigh Street Collection.
Finally after a few months there were sufficient prospective members to form a club. The Lions Club of Wickford was Chartered on 7 th February 1995 with 27 members. Wickford was one of the earliest mixed clubs to be formed in East Anglia, the club members were officially badged up on 20th March 1995 and presented with their Charter on 3rd June 1995.
The Wickford Lions Club established a twinning relationship with the Lions Club of Sompting & Lancing in West Sussex.
