Not only does the club help the local community, but it also helps with national and international projects
such as those summarised below.
NATIONAL CHARITIES
Carrying out local collections for national charities and causes, e.g. Children in Need and Marie Curie. We typically collect for Children in Need at Basildon, Laindon, and Pitsea stations, and in the future we hope to add in Wickford - please support our collections generously.SIGHT FIRST
Providing funds for the treatment of preventable blindness in India and other countries.OVERSEAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITALS
Providing funds to help equip children’s hospitals in the countries of the former YugoslaviaHUMANITARIAN DISASTERS - EMERGENCY AID
Providing funds for emergency aid for disasters around the World.USED SPECTACLESThe collection of used spectacles for distribution in third world countries. Several local Opticians support our collections. See the picture alongside, which shows a local optician with her Lions collection bin full of spectacles. Any spectacles that are unsuitable for re-use can still be recycled, and the frames can be melted down for scrap. In 2010 the co-ordinating Lions Club (Chichester) reported that it had raised £5,000 simply for the scrap metal from unusable frames. This money helps to pay for transport of used spectacles sent to developing countries. For more information about spectacle recyling click here |
