This page is under development - e.g., pictures to be added

This page sets out a brief description of the 'Fellowship' (Social) events enjoyed by club members and their guests during the year July 2010 to June 2011.

COMPETITIONS - IN THE CLUB

Members engage in a whole range of internal 'knock-out' competitions. These competitions are restricted to club members only. They are played week-by-week throughout the year, usually on our 'Fellowship' Club nights on the third Monday of the month (see the 'When and where we meet' link), but if we 'get behind schedule' then some matches may be played in members' homes. The list of 2010/11 winners is as below:

COMPETITIONS - HELD AT EXTERNAL VENUES

Some of our competitions require special facilities that are not available within the club's normal meeting places. These events are usually played 'straight through' on a dedicated evening or morning at an appropriate local venue. The winners and venues for 2010/11 are listed below:

DINNERS AND LUNCHES

We hold at least three dinners or lunches each year, to each of which members are encouraged to invite family members and other guests. Our main event is our annual 'Charter Lunch' at which we celebrate the formation of the club. Our Charter Lunch for 2010/11 was held at the Chichester, in Rawreth, on the first Sunday in February, and we were pleased to be able to welcome our guests and also visitors from other Lions Clubs.

Every year, right at the end of June, we hold our 'Change-over' Dinner, at which the Chain of Office is passed from the outgoing Club President to the new post-holder. The outgoing President also receives a 'scrapbook' - a permanent record of their year at the helm. This is also the occasion when all the club competition prizes are presented. This year's 'Changeover' was held at The Orb, in Billericay, where Lion Margaret Flack passed over the reigns to Lion John White.

Not surprisingly, we also all get together for a Christmas celebration each year. In December 2010 we dined at the Chimes in Rettendon.

"DIY" SOCIAL EVENTS

Club members often meet outside of the organised functions - eg, for a coffee, a chat, a beer, ... In October 2010, additionally we held an 'at home' evening, kindly hosted by Lion Doug Hamilton and his wife, Kate, at which members enjoyed a 'Chinese take-away', accompanied by some highly suitable liquid refreshment, all of course in a completely informal and relaxed setting.

EXTERNAL SPEAKERS

We sometimes invite external speakers to our 'Fellowship' meetings, and often in such circumstances we invite guests to participate too. In 2010/11 we enjoyed a very informative and interesting talk from the Friends of Wick Country Park.

VISITING OTHER CLUBS

Club members often visit other Lions Clubs. Often, the purpose is to exchange experiences with fundraising, service, and fellowship activities. We also attend other clubs' social and fundraising activities, and as an example, the team representing the Basildon and Wickford Lions were the leading Lions team at the quiz organised by our colleagues from Rayleigh - for the second year running!

Lions often go to other clubs' annual 'Charter' Celebrations, and during 2010/11 the clubs visited for this purpose included Canvey, Southend, Billericay, Leigh, and Thurrock. check the completeness of this list

VISITS AND OUTINGS

In a typical year we have organised visits to places such as Theatres and outdoor attractions. Please see our 'Future Events' link for our plans for 2011/12, and visit our 'Archives' page for details of past trips - which include visits to our twin club in Harderwijk in the Netherlands.

CONVENTIONS AND OTHER LIONS MEETINGS

Members of the Club are invited to attend the Annual Conventions at District (East Anglia), National (Great Britain & Ireland) and International. These conventions are 'business' oriented, but they include a significant social programme too, and they offer considerable 'fellowship' opportunites for members to mix with Lions from the wider community. Three members of the club attended the District Convention in Peterborough in March 2011.

Additionally, the club is invited to be represented at local 'Zone' and 'Region' meetings. Again, these meetings are primarily for 'business' purposes, but a large element of 'fellowship' is included. We particularly like meetings hosted by our colleagues in Billericay - they are a friendly bunch, but on top of that the beer is great!!!

Also, we enter a team in the 'District Quiz' each year - though we usually seem to come second!!!
