FUND RAISING REPORT 2010/11

This page was updated by Lion Alaric onWednesday, 31-Aug-2011 19:32:31 BST

This page is under development - e.g., pictures to be added

This page sets out a brief description of the 'Fund Raising events organised by the club during the year July 2010 to June 2011. We focus on those events that were specifically for funds that passed through our Charity Account (Registered Charity Number 298704). Some of those events had a particular organisation or cause in mind; others were simply planned to top up our general Charity account, to enable us to fund the activities described on the 'Service' page. We also mention events where we collected funds on behalf of another organisation; these events are described more fully on our 'Service' page.

Raising Funds for our Charity Account

200 CLUB

We run a '200 Club' amongst Club Members and 'Friends of Basildon & Wickford Lions Club'. Subscribers pay just £8 per year, and half the 'take' is given out in prizes, and the other half goes to the Club's Charity Account. There are no administrative costs associated with this initiative.

CHARITY GOLF DAY

The Charity Golf Day is run each year jointly with our colleagues from Thurrock Lions, and the two clubs share the profits. We are usually successful at getting individual holes on the course sponsored by local businesses. Entrants have a whole day's golf, with several prizes, and the entry also includes breakfast, lunch, and a dinner, at which the prizes and the trophy for the overall winner is presented. In September 2010 the event was held at the ... Golf Course.

CHRISTMAS SLEIGH

Every Christmas, Club Members, along with several relatives and friends of the club, assist Santa Claus on his pre-Christmas tour of the streets of parts of Runwell and Wickford. Unfortunately in 2010, though the icy conditions were ideal for Santa and his sleigh, they were far too treacherous for his helpers from the Lions Club, and so the whole run had to be cancelled. We hope to be back with Santa and his sleigh in 2011.

ST GEORGE'S SOCIETY GARDEN FETE

We are pleased to be able to run a bric-a-brac stall each year in August at the Garden Fete organised by the St George's Society. The funds raised go to our own Charity general fund, net of a donation to the St George's Society.

EASTER RAFFLE

Each year at Easter, several local pubs and bars agree to help us with our Annual Easter Raffle. The prize on offer at each pub is a neatly arranged package that includes an Easter cuddly toy, and various chocolate 'goodies'. These pubs and clubs participated in 2011: The Dick Turpin, The Duke, The Quart Pot, Bar Lazma, The Shepherd and Dog, The Darby Digger, The Three Compasses, and the Wickford Railway Club. We are extremely grateful for their help - and we are also grateful for all their 'chocoholic' customers who bought tickets!

CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT

We ran a very enjoyable, challenging, and well-supported quiz at Runwell Village Hall in June 2011, with our own Lion John Deleay as question-master. Ten teams of up to eight players took part. A visiting team won the main prize; we are not allowed to say who won the wooden spoon, but if you are eager to know, contact our secretary, Gill White - see the 'How to Contact Us' page. The proceeds were earmarked for the African School Library Project - see our 'Service' page for details.

ESSEX ROYALS FOOTBALL

The Essex Royals Football Tournament, held at Broomfields School each year over a weekend in early September provides the club with a major activity, to which virtually all of the club members contribute, along with friends and relatives. We sell the programmes for the organisers, and we also manage the car-park. The event brings back childhood memories of playing with 'Dinky' or 'Corgi' toys - only these are real cars, and there are lots of them! The challenge is that with careful organisation, the field can take about 500 cars - but during each of the two days, some 700 cars arrive - mostly during one of two 'manic' peak periods! With careful juggling, and with much running around the field and with suitable hand-waving communications, we haven't yet failed! In return for our efforts, Essex Royals kindly make a donation to our charity funds for general purposes.

DRAGON BOAT RACING

For the second year running, we were pleased to hold a stall at the event organised by the Essex Air Ambulance at Hanningfield Reservoir. In August 2010 we ran a 'Tombola' and a 'Play Your Cards Right' game. It turned out to be a VERY windy day, and we spent much of the day chasing things that blew off the stall across the field. Towards the end of the day, those still left at the event were offered some free entertainment at our expense as we battled to dismantle the gazebo in the dreadful weather. The funds we raised were split 50 / 50 between Water Aid and the Essex Air Ambulance.

COFFEE MORNINGS AT ST ANDREW'S CENTRE, WICKFORD

At the Saturday morning events we make the cakes and provide the refreshments; the profits then go to our own Charity Account. We held x such mornings during 2010/11.

Raising Funds for Other Organisations

These events were essentially 'Service' activities, but we mention them here for completeness. For more details, please see our 'Services' page.
  • Children in Need - collections at Pitsea, Basildon, and Laindon stations
  • St Luke's Hospice World Cup Sweepstake - it was set up by St Luke's and played amongst club members, with all the profits going directly to St Luke's
  • Collection at a Supermarket for the Marie Curie 'Daffodil' appeal – the Club organised the local collection and also provided many of the collectors
  • Coffee Mornings at St Andrew's Centre, Wickford - for the Friday morning events the cakes and refreshments are provided for us, by people from St Andrew's, and the proceeds then go to St Andrew's
